Intron…

is a old computer.  It is a socket 939 based Opteron that was fast when I first built it… seems like 5 or so years ago.  I’ve upgraded it with memory and as a server it works just fine when I don’t run anything else on it.

The problem is that I actually do log in to the console, run X, run gnome and then run firefox.  It’s quite nice as a web browser too.  But then I notice that firefox with my favorite pages loaded is sucking up an inordinate amount of processor cycles and memory.  Not surprising since most pages now have flash and video and who knows what other sorts of Ajax and javascript providing a ‘rich’ browsing experience.

Personally I wish that there were a simple page for everything where things wouldn’t be as dynamic and ‘rich’.  Actually that would probably just be a website without ads since it’s probably the ads that are sucking up so much processing power.

But anyways intron is grinding on and perhaps one day in the future when I have a real real need for an upgrade I’ll do it.  However for now, once I turn off firefox intron seems to be dishing up pages just fine.
